WELCOME

Hello and welcome to my portfolio. I have careful selected a mixture of work that showcases my skills & ideas over a number of disciplines within visual communication.

Visual communication has always been a passion within my life in many different ways. The ability to express my emotions and personality into design is a skill & career that I love. Becoming a graphic designer allows me to assist and contribute to the future of our society’s visual landscape.

For the last 2 years I have been studying a HND in Graphic Design. Within these 2 years I have gained a wealth of knowledge during this course that has helped me secure work placements and live briefs around the country. Along with this it has developed my skill set into becoming an independent
and committed graphic designer.

My portfolio consists of work from my HND year 1 and my current HND year 2 course. In contains a strong amount of visual communication work spanning from motion graphics & film to branding & identity. As well as the finished pieces within this portfolio, I have also included development & sketchbook work. It also contains 4 films which I have enclosed screenshots of the film.

Becoming a great professional within graphic design is a goal, a goal that I will commit myself completely. While studying at Manchester Met University I hope to improve myself as a graphic designer and an individual, knowing that I will receive some of the best design teaching from around the country.

If you wish to look at any more of my work please do not hesitate to visit my personal website www.nicholasandnick.com. As well as this i also have a vimeo channel which can be found at http://www.vimeo.com/user5332768.

Thank you for your time and enjoy.

No1 - PARENT HOMAGE

To create a body of experimental work with the addition of a 30 - 40 second experimental film based on the theme ‘Parents’. I chose to look at certain words that express the way i feel about not having a father while growing up. Along with the denial of not wanting to even think or talk about who my father was.

No2 - JAMIE CLAYTON_INSIDE IM DANCING_ARTWORK

Commissioned by indie songwriter Jamie Clayton to create artwork for his first EP ‘Inside im dancing’. Using his past experiences of been locked in a room while writing this EP allowed me to design this piece of artwork.

No3 - 24 HOURS

The brief was to explore the theme of 24 hours and how each individual looks at it.
My execution was photography and motion film and looking at how shadows are a subtle way of the 24 hours passing by. Yet we don’t take no notice at where the shadow lies.

To accompany this i also completed an experimental film showcasing the theme 24 hours and how shadows are constantly moving and formed.

No4 - ZINE

Our brief was to create a zine based on a personal subject to yourself. My outcome was based on a road in Birmingham called ‘Soho Road’. A road that stretches from West Bromwich into Birmingham and is filled some amazing sights, sounds and people. The diverse range of cultures make this road a truly remarkable experience. For my zines I wanted to express this colorful, vibrant and busy road within an abstract execution.

No5 - FUTURA

Design a set of promotional posters using only futura typeface. Along with the posters
a brief history was required.

No6 - EXPERIMENTAL FASHION FILM

A two-part experimental film based on Schizophrenia. The first execution of the film shows the calm and angel ‘esque’ side towards the girl.

No7 - EXPERIMENTAL FASHION FILM II

The second film shows the dark and twisted side to the girl. Showing a complete contrast between the two personalities.

No8 - JONATHAN BARNBROOK FEED NIGHT POSTER

To design a promotional poster for a FEED seminar which was hosted by the world famous typography Jonathan Barnbrook. As typography is a main aspect of Barnbrook’s career I wanted to incorporate this within my design.

No9 - TWELFTH NIGHT

To create a poster for the new production of William Shakespeare’s ‘twelfth night’ which was shown at Birmingham’s Millennium Point.

No10 - SUPREMATISM_TYPEFACE

To design & produce a typeface based on theme of geometry. Developing a typeface based upon a certain element I feel is appropriate to geometry. I chose to look at the 1915 art movement called SUPREMATISIM which was focused on fundamental geometric forms.

No11 - FASHIONLAB CATWALK SHOW

To create a 50+ fashion brochure to accompany Birmingham Metropolitans Fashion Lab End of year show 2010.

No12 - ME & MY SHADOW FILM

My final major project is a short film based on the theme ‘Loner’. Looking into what I believe a loner is and why. How they live their lives and why they choose to do this. Incorporating & experimenting other elements within this film such a music and typography.
